Why not rank movies by Tickets?

Is Avatar (such a weak movie) really the “King of the World”? Not so much. Gone with the Wind sold an estimated 202M tickets. Avatar’s nearly $2B revenue is misleading because of inflation and higher 3D ticket sales.

Rank Title Est. Tickets Year^
1 Gone with the Wind 202,044,600 1939^
2 Star Wars 178,119,600 1977^
3 The Sound of Music 142,415,400 1965
4 E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial 141,854,300 1982^
5 The Ten Commandments 131,000,000 1956
6 Titanic 128,345,900 1997
7 Jaws 128,078,800 1975
26 Avatar 75,980,500 2009

I think it’s okay to ask, “How many people saw the movie?” I saw Avatar and walked away impressed with the effects, but not the shallow plot, the weak metaphysics (Oprah-esque), or that the leading lady was partially nude (computer generated breasts are still breasts) in almost every scene.
